This Awesome 2000 BMW K1200LT Touring Motorcycle Can Do It All...With Comfort And Style
When BMW introduced its flagship K-1200LT Touring Motorcycle, there were some skeptics that thought it could not compete with the reigning touring motorcycle of the time, the Gold Wing. The skeptics were quickly hushed when BMW revealed a motorcycle that was faster, lighter, handled amazingly well with complete confidence on both straights and turns, and got better fuel economy than the Goldwing.
In fact, in 1999 the K1200LT received the Motorcycle of the Year award from Rider magazine, and this kind of award has been given to the BMW-K1200LT by other magazines too. The Robb Report named the LT the Best of the Best in 1999, and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum gave the LT it's Good Design Award. Motorcycle Online indicated that in their opinion, the 2000 BMW-K1200LT dethroned the Goldwing as the ultimate touring motorcycle. To quote, "The staff fought over the BMW when it came time to chose which bike to swing a leg over, so the K1200 LT is our new Long-Haul touring champion. Your tastes may require something different, but at MO, the Wing is no longer King." That year, Cycle World also named the LT the Best Touring Bike.
I have personally had the pleasure of owning both the BMW K1200LT and the Honda 1500 Goldwing and although there are many fine things to say about the Goldwing, in certain respects my favorite is the BMW. It has most of the same features that the Goldwing has: Reverse Gear, AM-FM Cassette Player, cruise control, etc. It has many features that the Goldwing DOESN'T have: heated grips and seats for cold weather riding, 6 Disc CD Player, Adjustable Seat Height, Trip Computer which tells you ambient temperature, miles left based on gasoline left in the tank, average mpg, and average speed. It has electronic cruise control just like on a car that you can set speed, increase speed and even decrease speed with the push of a button. And it has electrical outlets to plug in heated vests or riding suits for both rider and passenger.
It has an amazing feature in that it has an electrically adjustable windshield height that raises and lowers with the push of a button so that you can fine tune your ride based on wind conditions, speed, etc.
And similar to the Goldwing, it will offer extreme comfort on those long straightaways also referred to as Interstate Highways. But where it the BMW K-1200LT will seperate itself from the Goldwing is when you leave the interstate and decide to go on a road with some turns and curves. For the BMW is totally competent on those twisty roads that made us love motorcycling in the first place. So the BMW-K1200LT does it all.
My BMW has been carefully maintained and has had the full services done by an authorized BMW dealership, the last service being the 18000 mile service.
It currently has 21200 pampered miles and the oil used has been only high quality 100% synthetic oil.
Another amazing feature of this fine motorcycle is that it has ABS brakes; the same system used in BMW's most expensive cars.
And the gas mileage is amazing, averaging over 50 mpg in highway driving and between 35-40 in city driving, depending on how strong your wrist is.
It is amazingly quiet and smooth, and starts right up with the push of a button.
